To measure and improve the standard of care for over 40,000 mothers and babies each year, a large of data is collected, collated, and analyzed by health care providers, leaders, researchers, epidemiologists, and policy makers who identify trends and recommend ways to improve maternal, fetal, and neonatal health. With the increasing amount of data and reporting locations, Perinatal Services BC needed a new site to handle the growing load.
Security and speed of data entry were key requirements for this site. Because health information was being collected, enterprise security measures needed to be utilized to protect patient data. In addition, due to the volume of data being collected, the design of the site needed to be easy to use, facilitate rapid data entry, and support customizable data validation rules.
To address the security requirements, we built a platform that integrated the client’s enterprise-grade security systems and employed practices that made sure that patient data was protected while it was in motion and saved on a database. To address the data entry requirements, we studied the existing system, counting clicks, seconds, and keystrokes required to perform certain tasks and built an information architecture that reduced those flows, bringing some from over 50 clicks down to 5. We also used a design pattern familiar to those entering information — the look and feel of the page itself. This made the collection of data a much simpler experience.

Limited by the original technical design of the site, creating filterable lists required a complex set of workarounds that limited the ability for the portfolio to automatically grow.
To overcome the challenges, we restructured the way portfolios are categorized and wrote some code to eliminate the need to use workarounds.

Early in the project it was discovered that the site had been infected with malware and consequently was blocked by several security-monitoring services. This situation had caused the site’s visibility in Google to be severely diminished, resulting in a significant decrease in traffic.
Our new design enabled users to quickly be offered the two services offered by the client. Utilizing SEO-friendly practices and responsive design principles, we created a site that is easy to find, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to use, regardless of the type of device that you use. In addition, we cleaned up the malware and moved the client to a shiny new server complete with backups, daily malware scans, and, most importantly, got the site removed from any blacklists caused by the malware.
